How to Discover Your God given Gifts and Talents

Your gift already exists within you. The real task isn’t to create it, it’s to uncover it. Think of it like treasure buried beneath the surface of your everyday life. You don’t need to invent it. You need to notice it.

So, how do you find this hidden part of you?

1. What Comes Easy to You

Ease is not laziness. In the world of purpose, ease is often a signal from God. There are certain things you can do with little effort that others struggle with. That’s not a coincidence. That’s design.

Some people have a natural talent for teaching, while others instinctively take on leadership roles. Some create beauty even in chaos, or can calm tense situations effortlessly. You might not see these abilities as anything special because they come naturally to you. However, what feels easy for you might be truly extraordinary to others.

I’ve noticed that I can grasp complex ideas and write extensively about a single topic. For instance, when someone shares a scripture quotation, I can unpack its meaning and elaborate on it for several pages. However, I find it challenging to learn a song's tune, melody, and lyrics. This contrast has been a significant indicator for me: my gift for teaching and writing was already within me, expressing itself naturally.

Take a step back. What do you do without strain? What do others come to you for, even informally? If something flows through you like breath, don't dismiss it. It might be your divine fingerprint.

2. What You Love Deeply

Passion is more than preference. It’s a pull. A fire. A deep inner craving that doesn’t fade even when life gets hard.

When you love something deeply, you engage it even when no one is watching. You stay up late researching it. You talk about it with energy. You’d do it for free. That’s more than a hobby, that’s  purpose calling.

This kind of passion is often shaped by your personality and background, but it goes deeper than influence. It is part of your makeup and is alive inside you.

Have you noticed what you focus on when no one is telling you what to do? That’s the direction your soul is drawn toward.

During my time as a Teaching Assistant at a prestigious university in Ghana, I experienced firsthand the joy of teaching. I enjoyed it so much that I sometimes dreaded Fridays, as they meant my teaching duties were coming to an end for the week. I offered free tutorials without expecting any payment, not even a single cedi. Why? Because teaching felt more like a joy than a job. Watching my students understand, grow, and excel ignited a passion within me that I couldn't ignore.

3. What Breaks Your Heart

Sometimes your gift is revealed through what you can’t ignore.

Compassion is a powerful indicator of a calling. If you feel stirred or burdened by issues such as homelessness, broken families, injustice, or sickness, there’s a strong possibility that your gifts are tied to the solutions.

Many people walk past pain. But if something keeps tugging at your heart and you feel a responsibility to act, that’s not just emotion. That’s purpose knocking.

Compassion doesn’t always lead you into a formal role. It might lead you into invention, teaching, service, business, or healing. But it always draws you toward transformation.

4. What Others Affirm in You

Sometimes others see what you overlook.

When people keep pointing out a strength in you, whether it’s your voice, your leadership, your insight, or your presence, don’t brush it off. Pay attention.

Parents, friends, mentors, and even strangers may give you clues. When different people repeatedly say the same thing over time, it's worth noting as confirmation.

After finishing senior high school, I taught at a private basic school. One day, I felt a strong conviction that I was disappointing God by not preaching. Inspired by this feeling, I led a school worship service and delivered a short sermon.

Weeks later, a fellow teacher, who wasn't very in tune with religious matters, told me he overheard a conversation among two students discussing my exceptional teaching abilities, and he encouraged me to continue. I was stunned by this feedback.

That wasn't the only confirmation I received. While at university, I participated in an evangelism activity with two friends. During the discussion, I unexpectedly took charge of the conversation and shared my thoughts with such clarity and conviction that one of my teammates remarked to my friend, "He preaches like a true evangelist”.

This doesn’t mean you live by their opinions. But it means their feedback can guide you. God often uses others to reflect back to us what we haven’t recognized in the mirror.
